Though most of our members aren’t sailing much during the winter, we do find ways to have fun together.
Some of our sailors, along with family and friends have taken up playing badminton each Saturday. We play at Ascend Badminton in the ActivityPlex in East London. We use two courts and play over two hours. Most of us are recreational players, some are new to the game and a few are quite advanced. It’s a lot of fun and nobody takes the games too seriously. After playing is over, some of us go out for a coffee or lunch as a “cool down”!
Another fun social event during this cold and snowy season is our Winter Dinners Out. We dine out as a group of about 20 or more every second Wednesday of the winter months. For the past couple of years we have gathered at the Fireside Grill on Commissioners Rd. E in London. Owner Tom and his Fireside Grill staff have been very welcoming to the FYC sailors, family and friends.
Though we may have to bundle up to get to these events, it’s really great to get together with fellow sailors to discuss the upcoming sailing season, trade yarns about sailing, racing or cruising and even discuss the nuances of boat equipment and repairs!
