EVENT OVERVIEW:  The 2024 Kiwanis Cup Thrills & Skills Youth Fun Regatta will be held at the Fanshawe Yacht Club, August 10, 2024. The organizing authority for this regatta is the Fanshawe Yacht Club Sailing School. This event is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Middlesex, London.

The purpose of this regatta is to provide a fun, safe, and educational event where young sailors, can develop skills while competing in casual and informal races/games. Our focus will be more on sailors having fun and developing team spirit, with less emphasis on winning. This event will feature both land and water-based activities. For example, there will be a race where the sailors must sail backwards, and on land, there may be a race to see who can rig a boat the fastest. This will be a good introduction for any young sailor who hasn’t been to an out-of-town regatta. However, we welcome any sailors who just want to have fun! Some of you may be familiar with the term, “un-regatta”. In essence, it will be a “fun-regatta.”

ELIGIBILITY:  While this is an open regatta, all participants must have earned a minimum of CanSail Level 2 (or equivalent), and be under the age of 18.

RULES:  The rules for each race will be explained prior to start time or during the skippers meeting

RACING FORMAT AND SCORING:  Once all the sailors have checked-in, teams will be formed, so that each team is made up of sailors at different CanSail levels. Every effort will be made to create teams that are even in number and a similar range of skill level. Team members will not be based on their home club. In other words, a team may be made of sailors from different home clubs or sailing schools. The creation of the teams and the type of water-based races will also be determined by the type of boats that sailors bring with them. Sailors will be competing as a team. After each race/event, points will be awarded to each team, not an individual sailor.

BOATS:  We ask that sailors bring their own boats, or borrow boats from their home club or sailing school. Our sailing school has some boats that may be loaned out. These include RS Fevas, RS Zests, RS Quests, 420s and CL 14s.
There is no way to know how many of our boats will be available, so if you can, please bring a boat!

LIFE JACKETS:  UL AND TC (Transport Canada) approved life jackets or PFD’s must be worn at all times when sailors are on the water, or on the dock. Depending on availability, we’ll try to supply life jackets to those without.

LIABILITIES:  It is the competitor’s decision to enter the regatta or to start and continue in any race or event. The parents or guardian of all the participants must complete a liability waiver before participating in any regatta events, including social events and meals. Furthermore, any parents, or friends who come onto FYC grounds must also complete a liability form. Click Here to open the Liability Form pdf.  You can print it, fill it out and bring it with you to the Regatta.

ACCOMMODATIONS: There are several hotels conveniently located near Veterans Memorial
