The 2025 Wooden Boat Classic Regatta (aka, the Puddle Duck Regatta) was held on a hot and almost windless day.
There were 12 boats (mostly seaworthy) with 13 racers competing.
Race Committee chair Jimmy Mac the Knife MacKenzie conducted 3 races ranging from within the harbour and the mooring buoys to a final ambitious out beyond the rowing lanes to round Race Mark #1 and back again. With puffy and almost non-existent breezes, this kind of racing was a challenge. But while most of Jimmy’s rules were adhered to, this reporter cannot verify that all races were without incident – rubbing is racing afterall.
The overall winner of the day was Sailing School Director Gilles Sweet-Boulay, trying out a newly acquired Hansa AbleSail boat (pink mainsail and jib). After a successful trial of the newly certified Person Lift to help rig the boat, Gilles somehow found some wind on the courses to end up in first place overall.
It was a fun and sometimes frustrating day of sailing for the 13 intrepid sailors and a delight for the spectators.
A highlight was Sailor Mike receiving a gift of a painting of his current sailboat, “The Mary C” by London artist Ilona Burghardt.
(Editor’s Note: Sadly, Sailor Mike passed away October 12. We were so grateful he was able to enjoy some of these events later in the season. Fair Winds Mike. Find his Tribute Here)
