Reminder that the Fanshawe Reservoir water level guage can be found\u00a0<strong>here<\/strong>. Normal level is about 0.2m and the top of the main dock is about 0.70m.<\/p><h6>Tuesday, July 23, 2024\u00a0 3.21pm<\/h6><p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Fanshawe Conservation Area<\/span> has announced via their <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fanshaweconservationarea.ca\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Website<\/a><\/strong> and Facebook that the reservoir has<strong> Reopened!<\/strong>\u00a0 They advise caution as there may be some debris remaining in the water.\u00a0 Very good news indeed!<\/p><h6>Monday, July 22, 2024<\/h6><p>The UTRCA has advised FYC that Fanshawe Lake will remain CLOSED tomorrow, Tuesday, July 23.\u00a0 Stay tuned for more updates.<\/p><h6>Thursday, July 18, 2024<\/h6><p>Fanshawe Lake still closed. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thamesriver.on.ca\/watershed-responding-to-yesterdays-rain-flood-bulletin-july-17-22-2024\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Click Here<\/a><\/strong> to view the most recent Flood Bulletin from the UTRCA effective until July 22.<\/p><ul><li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">A Reminder from the Harbour Masters to FYC Members who have boats on the moorings<\/span><\/strong>:\u00a0 While the High Water Team has been checking boats as the water rose, now, as the water recedes, it would be helpful to the Team if you can row out to your own boat and begin shortening up your bow painter. Once the lake levels are close to normal (about 30cm below the top of the main dock), then you can put your mooring chain back on your\u00a0 boat. By that time, the mooring floats will all be above water again.\u00a0 Make sure all attachment points for the primary pennant (chain) and secondary pennant (painter) are secure.\u00a0 If you are not able to get to your own boat, please ask a friend at FYC to help you with this.<\/li><\/ul><h6>\u00a0<\/h6><h6>Tuesday, July 16, 2024<\/h6><p>Here is an update on the water levels from the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority posted yesterday:<\/p><div class=\"xdj266r x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs x126k92a\"><div dir=\"auto\">The heavy rain that fell across the Upper Thames River watershed last week created saturated soil conditions, making the watershed very reactive to further rain. 21, 2024<\/h6><p>On Saturday, May 18, Members of Fanshawe Yacht Club formed a parade of sailboats to sail past and salute Commodore Stacey.\u00a0 Several Honourary Members also joined the parade on the new barge surprising Commodore Stacey and First Gentleman John.\u00a0 It was a perfect afternoon to kick off the sailing season with sun, warm temperatures and gentle breezes.<\/p><p>Once the boats were back on their moorings or on their trailers, the sailors headed up to Doug MacKenzie Hall to meet this year&#8217;s Executive and wish them well. Then everyone filed into the clubhouse enjoy the Commodore&#8217;s Reception.\u00a0 This year&#8217;s theme was High Tea at FYC.\u00a0 The Social Committee decorated the Hall beautifully with spring flowers.\u00a0 Delicious little sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and jam, and a variety of sweet treats were presented on fine china.\u00a0 Tea was served in china cups and saucers&#8230;just as the Commodore wished.\u00a0<\/p><p>The <strong>Member of the Year Award<\/strong> for the previous year is traditionally presented at this event.\u00a0 The Members of the Year for 2023 are Renata and Franz Lohmann (with a great shout out to their kids).\u00a0 Beside Renata&#8217;s formal FYC Marketing and Social Media Coordinator Roles, this couple quietly take on jobs around the club to help ensure that all runs smoothly.\u00a0 Congratulations and well-deserved Renata and Franz!<\/p><p>The Slideshow below features photos by A. It will be used as a work platform for installation, and removal of the mooring field at the beginning and end of each sailing season.\u00a0 It will also be used for periodic maintenance of the moorings (lift, inspect, repair mooring weights and\/or chains &amp; kellets if necessary).\u00a0 Finally, the new barge will be used as the Race Committee boat for major regattas.\u00a0<\/p><p>Our thanks to Ken S. A non-traditional regatta, this event would find young sailors competing in fun events that are not the normal &#8220;around the buoys&#8221; races. He said that they especially like supporting events that involve children. He\u00a0suggested that perhaps this could be an opportunity for the sailing school to get some\u00a0outsider funding to support some of our programs.<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div class=\"t pg-1m0 pg-1x1 pg-1h3 pg-1y7 pg-1ff1 pg-1fs0 pg-1fc0 pg-1sc0 pg-1ls0 pg-1ws0\">After a couple of Sailing School meetings, and a meeting with Tim, we put together a list\u00a0of some of our needs, and goals. This included, covering bus costs, new gangway for\u00a0the school docks, a ceiling mounted projector, instructor training, and possibly starting a\u00a0new youth regatta. We couldn\u2019t decide which item was more important and which the\u00a0Kiwanis would be interested in. So we decided to present them with our list of needs,\u00a0and let them choose where they would like to direct their donation. That is assuming we\u00a0even get their support.<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div class=\"t pg-1m0 pg-1x1 pg-1h3 pg-1ye pg-1ff1 pg-1fs0 pg-1fc0 pg-1sc0 pg-1ls0 pg-1ws0\">The Kiwanis have a board meeting once a month, and they invited the Sailing School to make a presentation at one of their meetings. So, on Nov 2nd, I visited the Kiwanis Seniors Community Centre located at the corner of Riverside and Wharncliffe, to present a list of six proposals to the Kiwanis board of directors. During the presentation, the Kiwanis learned about the entire Fanshawe Yacht Club and how the sailing school was just one part of the club. Several slides showed the beautiful grounds and buildings like the Doug MacKenzie Hall and the Sailing School building. Of course there were a lot of photos of boats, big and small, on Fanshawe Lake.<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div class=\"t pg-1m0 pg-1x1 pg-1h3 pg-1y16 pg-1ff1 pg-1fs0 pg-1fc0 pg-1sc0 pg-1ls0 pg-1ws0\">The group seemed very impressed. And we found out later that there were several former sailors, who were part of the Kiwanis Board of Directors. So, we were pretty hopeful.\u00a0\u00a0One month later, during their December meeting, the Kiwanis Board of Directors discussed our proposals, and voted to support the creation of a new youth regatta. During our proposal we had budgeted $1300 to start this regatta. They approved to provide a grant for the whole amount. However, they ask that we provide more details in the future.<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div class=\"t pg-1m0 pg-1x1 pg-1h3 pg-1y1e pg-1ff1 pg-1fs0 pg-1fc0 pg-1sc0 pg-1ls0 pg-1ws0\">Wow! That was great news for us, but it also meant that from this point on, the Sailing School would have to begin planning to run a regatta. The first step was putting together an idea of what this regatta could look like.<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div class=\"t pg-1m0 pg-1x1 pg-1h3 pg-1y21 pg-1ff1 pg-1fs0 pg-1fc0 pg-1sc0 pg-1ls0 pg-1ws0\">On Jan 10, we had a meeting with Cam L from Ontario Sailing. We told him about our\u00a0idea of creating a regatta for younger kids, mostly in the CanSail 3-4 group. Essentially\u00a0for kids who may be too intimidated to go to Cork, or other larger regattas. And we also\u00a0wanted to incorporate an educational element.<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div class=\"t pg-1m0 pg-1x1 pg-1h3 pg-1y25 pg-1ff1 pg-1fs0 pg-1fc0 pg-1sc0 pg-1ls0 pg-1ws0\">Cam was impressed with our goals, but he suggested that we avoid trying to be like other regattas. That\u2019s when he suggested the \u201cun-regatta\u201d format. This type of event meant that the focus could be more on fun, and team building. We had never heard of an un-regatta, so he sent us some links to some online videos. When we learned what they were all about, we were hooked.\u00a0 An un-regatta does not have the usual windward, leeward race format. Instead, it consists of activities which force the sailors to put their sailing skills to use in unusual, sometimes silly races. For example, they may race backwards, sail through an obstacle course or play a form of frisbee golf on the water. There will also be land activities like knot tying races, and contests to see who can rig a boat the fastest. All the young sailors would be part of a team, so no one single sailor wins a race. Everything is a team effort.<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"dp-page-inner\"><div id=\"pg-2pf2\" class=\"pf pg-2w0 pg-2h0\" data-page-no=\"2\"><div class=\"pc pg-2pc2 pg-2w0 pg-2h0\"><div class=\"c pg-2x0 pg-2y1 pg-2w2 pg-2h2\"><div>\u00a0<\/div><div class=\"t pg-2m0 pg-2x1 pg-2h3 pg-2y9 pg-2ff1 pg-2fs0 pg-2fc0 pg-2sc0 pg-2ls0 pg-2ws0\">On Jan 10, 2024, we pitched the idea to the president of the Kiwanis Club, Carol T,\u00a0along with a few other board members. They loved the idea!\u00a0On top of that, they also wanted to help us out with more fund raising, and to help by\u00a0providing more volunteers.<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div class=\"t pg-2m0 pg-2x1 pg-2h3 pg-2yd pg-2ff1 pg-2fs0 pg-2fc0 pg-2sc0 pg-2ls0 pg-2ws0\">On Feb 14, 2024, during one of monthly FYC social dinners, several Kiwanis members\u00a0were invited, and at the Fireside Grill, they presented the Fanshawe Yacht Club with a\u00a0cheque for $1300.00.<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div class=\"t pg-2m0 pg-2x1 pg-2h3 pg-2y10 pg-2ff1 pg-2fs0 pg-2fc0 pg-2sc0 pg-2ls0 pg-2ws0\">There\u2019s no turning back now!<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div class=\"t pg-2m0 pg-2x1 pg-2h3 pg-2y11 pg-2ff1 pg-2fs0 pg-2fc0 pg-2sc0 pg-2ls0 pg-2ws0\">We\u2019ve sent emails to various club and sailing schools in Southwestern Ontario.
